San Diego Lab Management Symposium

Friday, March 2, 2012 8:30am – Saturday, March 3, 2012 4:30pm (Pacific Time)

Introduction

"You are now a fully trained biomedical research scientist. You have earned a PhD or an MD or both and have spent several years as a postdoctoral fellow learning the ropes of your specialty. You have the credentials you need for a career as an academic researcher. But as you establish your own laboratory and build your research program, you are becoming aware that research skills are only a part - albeit a critical part - of what you need to succeed." - Making the Right Moves

This course was inspired by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) and Howard Hughes Medical Institutes (HHMI)'s scientific management course, Making the Right Moves(http://www.hhmi.org/labmanagement) and the goal is to prepare young scientists with the knowledge and professional competencies to manage and lead innovative academic research programs. The course will introduce the idea of leadership vs management, and creating a vision. Faculty speakers will share their experiences and advice on the challenges of setting up a new lab, hiring and managing staff, balancing time, understanding how to advance in a tenure system, and the best practices for teaching and mentoring. This workshop is an essential learning opportunity for your career development.

With your registration, you will receive course material, copy of BWF/HHMI's Making the Right Moves, and meals during the event.
