Postdoc Appreciation Week 2013

In today's competitive environment, postdocs need additional tools and strategies to achieve career success.   One way is to take ideas taught in business school. For example, as scientists, you have two products, you and your research. Your goal is to "sell" yourself to potential recruiters and employers, or "sell" your research to potential funding agencies, community, or colleagues.  How do you do that? One idea is to have a professional LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is the go-to site for many recuiters and employers. Many people are approached everyday on LinkedIn and offered positions.

Another idea is to have a professional website that contains current research information, publications and activities. Many private funding agencies search keywords to find out who is doing research in their target areas. A professional looking website should communicate that you are on the cutting edge of research and that you are capable of carrying out the research.

Today’s technology allows easy marketing and sharing of your brand.  For UC San Diego’s Postdoc Appreciation Week 2013, the Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs has organized a series of events to help you as a postdoc establish your brand, communicate your research, develop your online presence and cultivate relationships to help you transition to the next step of your career.

Marc Kuchner, author and NASA astrophysicist, will present two workshops based on his acclaimed book,
Marketing for Scientists: How to Shine in Tough Times.  A recent Amazon.com review stated, "I'm a professor of physics at a major research university. My colleagues and I tend to consider marketing or salesmanship at best a necessary evils. This book takes a more positive and inclusive attitude toward marketing, casting it as being about relationship-building, and I have to say I'm convinced! The book helps us understand that everything we do has a customer (fellow scientists, neighbors or family, the public, Congress) and that we need to consider each customer's needs as we interact with him or her. Much of the first half of the book felt familiar and right to me -- I've long tried to convey these ideas to my proteges, but I don't do it systematically, and Marketing for Scientists makes the connections clearer than I have ever articulated. The second half of the book stretched my thinking more, and I expect it to be useful to me for years to come. The book's value is so clear to me that I bought copies for all of my 15 group members, and I plan to have us discuss and debate its ideas at group meetings in the coming month."

KuchnerMarketing for Scientists will discuss how to apply the business practice of marketing to science and how you can be competitive in this tough economic times.

WHEN: 9:00-10:30am
